Suncadia Resort
Location: Near Roslyn, Washington | Owner: Suncadia Resort
The Suncadia Resort project involved the construction of over 4,000 homes and 55 miles of new roads. ICE’s initial involvement on the project in 1997 was during preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS); as part of the EIS we detailed the coal mine hazards at the project site. ICE has provided geotechnical engineering services to Suncadia for design and construction of various phases of the project since 2004. Some of the project elements include a fire station, recycling center, pump stations, administration building, turf care facilities for golf courses, parking lots, community activity center, a large-diameter arch culvert, road alignment engineering and gravel pit reclamation.
Snoqualmie Falls Hydroelectric Redevelopment
Location: Snoqualmie, Washington | Owner: Puget Sound Energy
ICE provided geotechnical engineering services for two proposed pedestrian bridges at remote sites within the Bellevue Botanical Garden. The project included design of two timber bridges, including a 140-foot span suspension bridge and a 70-foot span truss bridge, as well as construction of the suspension bridge. In order to evaluate subsurface conditions at the bridge abutment/anchor sites, ICE subcontracted with Geologic Drill Explorations to operate “robot” mini-track drill equipment that was able to use existing trails for the approach, then successfully maneuvered in difficult terrain to access the drill sites. ICE evaluated the stability of steep slopes in the vicinity of the bridge abutments and provided recommendations for maintaining slope stability. ICE also provided recommendations for earthwork including stripping and excavation of unsuitable soils, fill compaction and subgrade preparation requirements, and suitability of on-site soils for use in structural fills including an evaluation of the effects of weather and/or construction equipment on the workability of site soils, and recommendations for foundation and ground anchor design, including passive pressures and drainage considerations.
Kittitas County Head Start Redevelopment
Location: Ellensburg, Washington | Owner: Kittitas County Head Start
ICE provided geotechnical engineering services for the redevelopment of Kittitas County Head Start in Ellensburg. The property redevelopment included the addition of about 10,200 square feet of building space, paved access and parking. The purpose of our services was to explore subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at the project site as a basis for developing geotechnical recommendations for site redevelopment. Nine test pits were dug to depths ranging from 6 to 9 feet. The test pit explorations were continuously observed by a geologist from ICE who classified the soils, observed groundwater conditions, and prepared a detailed log of each test pit.
A geotechnical design report was prepared with a summary of our observations and conclusions and recommendations for site preparation, earthwork and foundation design, pavement design and site drainage. ICE also provided on-call geotechnical services during construction.
Estates at Gold Hill
Location: Near Crystal Mountain, Washington
The proposed Estates at Gold Hill property includes 8 residential lots to be constructed on a steep (over 100 percent grade in some areas) hillside overlooking the Crystal Mountain ski resort in Pierce County. ICE completed detail geologic reconnaissance, some by ropes for safety in the steeper areas, and a subsurface exploration program consisting of test pits and test holes. We characterized the site conditions for areas underlain by Colluvium, Talus, Shallow Bedrock and Surface Bedrock. We evaluated steep slope areas where a community drainfield and utility easement are planned.
We expect homes will be constructed by using a foundation system that requires minimal ground disturbance (such as piers or shafts) that extend to and are socketed into bedrock for lateral stability.
